Chair | Lion Riina Quak |
Speakers | Prof. Dr. Tarmo Soomere |
Description | We normally hardly recognise climate-change-driven gradual alterations of air temperature, precipitation patterns, or sea level in our countries. The devil is hidden in the detail and the power of the changes becomes evident via the impact of extreme events because resilience of both natural ecosystems and human settlements is a threshold-based feature. Even though we could be sorry for polar bears who gradually lose their icy environment, the really disastrous events occur when the external pressures (e.g. water level) exceeds certain threshold values. In particular, the coastal area is under pressure as devastating extreme water levels combined with high waves could simply wash away large cities and turn large areas into water bodies, so that there is no place for evacuated people to return after a storm. This has happened many times in Europe during the last millennium. It is likely that by 2070 more than one billion people will have to seek another place to live for this reason alone. The remote impact of this massive migration wave will eventually touch the entire civilisation, including countries that today enjoy a pleasant climate and location on higher ground. It is unlikely that this scenario can be avoided but there are many ways to be prepared and to convert our concern into action that makes mankind stronger. |
